Manitoba E-Association, Central Plains Inc. and Community Futures Heartland are pleased to announce the successful approval for broadband funding into more than 10 communities as a result of the Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Program – Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CMIP-MRIF). The project will be rolled out into parts of the Central Plains & Heartland Regions and will be known as “Central Manitoba Broadband (CMB).” The communities involved on this project include:

• Portage la Prairie (RM)    North Norfolk (RM)
• Pembina (RM)     Glenella (RM)
• Stanley (RM)      Grey (RM)
• Victoria (RM)      South Norfolk (RM)
• Lorne (RM)      Notre Dame de Lourdes (Village)

The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund was created to improve the quality of life for all citizens and build the foundation for sustained long-term economic growth in the 21st Century. As part of their program, MRIF has identified broadband access as an important component in rural quality of life, here in Manitoba. Please visit http://www.infrastructure.mb.ca for additional information about the Canada-Manitoba Infrastructure Program.

On December 21, 2006 an announcement was made by the Honourable Vic Toews and the Honourable Christine Melnick to support a $2.6-million broadband project in the Central Plains & Heartland Regions.

The successful Internet Service provider (ISP) who was selected through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process is I-NetLink Incorporated. This company has been extremely successful in providing wireless high-speed Internet services to communities since 2001 that have been unable to attract major carriers into their communities.

Other partners such as Central Plains Inc., Community Futures Heartland, Manitoba Agriculture and Food Rural Initiatives (MAFRI), staff of the Central Plains GO team, Lakeview CDC, Manitoba E-Association, 9 Rural Municipalities & 1 Village are also part of this initiative.

This broadband service will be used to enhance business, education and healthcare services. More importantly it will provide a mechanism to un-served and/or under-served communities that augment economic growth. We are welcoming this much needed service.

The anticipated completion time of this project is December 31, 2008.
